(Bucarest).- EGBA’s top executive, Maarten Haijer, speaks on the importance of gambling protections on Romanian TV.

EGBA Advocates for Romania to Introduce a National Self-Exclusion Registry for Players

In a recent interview, Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of EGBA, emphasized the importance of implementing a national self-exclusion register for gambling in Romania. This key player protection measure has already been adopted by 17 EU member states, helping to promote responsible gambling practices.

The interview took place during a special event at the Romanian Parliament, organized by the Romanian online gambling association (AOJND).

EGBA’s Key Recommendations for Romania

During the meeting, EGBA outlined a comprehensive framework for self-exclusion, stressing that the proposed system should:

  • Apply to all licensed gambling operators, including land-based and online platforms.
  • Be accessible via a GDPR-compliant, government website with a user-friendly interface.
  • Be clearly communicated and integrated into gambling platforms for easy access.
  • Function in real-time and ensure a fail-proof exclusion process.
  • Include minimum and maximum exclusion periods, offering flexibility to players.
  • Provide self-excluded players with resources and support services.
  • Require gambling operators to remove self-excluded users from marketing databases.

A Step Toward Stronger Player Protection in Romania

By adopting these best practices from other European markets, Romania can strengthen its responsible gambling framework while offering better safeguards for players
